Story

Steps

In 1947, Giovanni Maculan established the winery and began vinifying local grapes to create wines that were sold in damigianas, or large jars, and in one-liter bottles with a crown closure. After earning his oenology degree, his son Fausto began working as a winemaker in 1973.

He traveled to the top wine-producing regions in the world and experimented, occasionally leaving his onlookers in a state of disbelief. He returned to Breganze with a variety of ideas, including winery equipment and winemaking procedures, but most importantly, he knew that viticulture is one of the most crucial factors. Fausto therefore began to cultivate high density vineyards in the middle of the 1980s after seeing them in Bordeaux and Burgundy. The winery currently oversees 50 hectares in the DOC Breganze and cranks out 650.000 bottles annually.

Trade

Fausto approached North America in the early 1980s after realizing the value of export markets. Since 1981, Maculan wines have been available at the finest dining establishments and upscale wine stores in the USA and Canada. Currently, Italy accounts for about 65% of sales of these wines, but 35% of the production is exported to 25 different countries. The Maculan family’s wines are available in Europe, North America, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Australia, and New Zealand.

A new era

Since 2007, Angela and Maria Vittoria have enthusiastically assisted their father Fausto in running the winery.

Region

The DOC Breganze is located in the heart of Veneto, on a hillside beneath the Asiago Highplains. The soil is primarily volcanic. The volcanic tuff ensures that the vines receive the proper minerals and nutrients and has excellent natural drainage. The foreign varieties have discovered their ideal habitat here for the past 200 years.

Varieties

The Maculan family has traditionally vinified Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Nero, and Marzemino, making full-bodied red wines that are intense and remarkably true to the varietal characteristics. These wines are both ready-to-drink and have a lengthy potential bottle aging life. With the help of Tai, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, and Chardonnay, fresh white wines with great acidity and a fruity fragrance can also be produced, as well as white wines for extended age.

Last but not least, the Vespaiola, the “queen” of Breganze, used to make two fresh-grape white wines (Vespaiolo and Valvolpara Vespaiolo) as well as two of the most well-known dessert wines in the world: Torcolato and Acininobili.
